The foundations of Azle
Historic Ash Creek Cemetery began in 1871 on two acres of land donated by Dr. James Azle Steward and John Giles Reynolds.
The first two recorded burials were W.P. Gregg and Dave Morrison in 1874
The citizens of Azle met and organized the Azle Cemetery Association on February 22, 1922. The Association’s first Directors were Dr. S.I. Sturges, Chairman; Mrs. J.R. Walker, Secretary-Treasurer; W.I. Smith, W.T. Gipson, E.L. Huster, and T.A. Woodroof.
The Azle Cemetery Association Foundation was created on March 12, 1968, to provide for the care of the cemetery.
An historical marker was erected in 1985 to commemorate the cemetery’s 114 years of history.
Today, the cemetery covers 17 1/2 acres and has over 4000 graves.
