History of Azle Cemetery Association

The first sellers started arriving in the area in the 1840’s and settled beside Ash Creek.

Two of the early settlers, Dr. James Azle Steward and John Giles Reynolds, saw the need for a burial site and the each gave an acre of land in 1871 to form Ash Creek Cemetery. Both acres
lay in Parker County.

In the beginning of the cemetery, the graves were randomly placed with trees and large rocks serving as markers. Many who had loved ones buried here moved away so the job of caring for the graves fell to their friends and neighbors. There are no records of these early burials and the names and locations are unknown today.

The first recorded burials are Dave Morrison in 1874 and W. P. Gregg buried near Morrison later that same year.

The Azle Cemetery Association was organized on February 22, 1922 to oversee the upkeep of the cemetery and to keep accurate burial records. The membership is comprised of all living persons who have relatives buried in Ash Creek Cemetery.

Sr Samuel I. Sturges was elected chairman and Mrs. Ida (J.R.) Walker was elected Secretary/Treasurer. The other directors were W.I. Smith, W.T. Gipson, E.L. Huster, and T.A. Woodroof. A tabernacle was built in 1947 for family gatherings at funerals and to hold the annual homecoming meetings. It was torn down in 2015 and replaced with a new open pavilion with niches for cremation urns.

The Azle Cemetery Association Foundation was created March 12, 1968 to accumulate funds to be used for the perpetual care and maintenance of the cemetery. Since the first two acres of donated land in 1871, the Association has acquired additional land for a total of 17 acres with over 4000 graves.

In loving memory.
